Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts (HfMDK) is the only university of music, drama and dance in the German state of Hessen. It offers training to young instrumentalists and teachers of music, singers, composers and conductors, dancers, directors and actors. 60 professors and 350 teachers teach around 800 students.
It is the goal of the HfMDK to train its students to the highest levels of excellence and also to make a contribution to cultural education in general. Networking with cultural life in Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main conurbation is a central aspect of the University's profile and, with over two hundred public events each year, it is also an important source of cultural inspiration.
The wide range of artistic potential is reflected in over 20 successful practice-oriented courses offered by the University. Courses are offered in the fields of instrumental playing and singing, composition, conducting, church music, teacher training for all levels of primary and secondary education, contemporary and classical dance, as well as acting and stage direction and theatre and orchestra management. It is also possible to pursue doctoral studies in the teaching of music or musical science.
The HfMDK realises numerous projects within the range of cultural education as well as interdisciplinary joint ventures with important cultural institutions in Hessen and throughout Germany.
The HfMDK is also involved in the ongoing process of developing structures for academic research. Society today assigns this responsibility not only to universities and specialised institutes, but also to universities of applied sciences and art academies.
